On a beautiful morning, our Roseberry community came together in ngingalla our community garden to support a cause close to many hearts—the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The event was a resounding success, filled with warmth, laughter, and a shared commitment to breast cancer awareness and research.
The morning tea was an engaging and humorous event, with the scene capably set by Roseberry staff – tables covered with pink decorations, a range of pink cupcakes, raffles donated by Olive and Fig and a variety of cupcakes, fruit and chocolates. This encouraged meaningful conversations especially the highlight of the event an informative session on breast awareness, led by Andrea Cornthwaite Director Midwifery from CQHHS. The session covered essential topics such as the importance of regular self-examinations, recognizing early signs of breast cancer, and understanding the resources available for support and treatment.
Adding a touch of creativity and fun to the event, while supporting the fund-raising effort, was the bra decorating contest. Participants showcased their artistic talents by decorating bras. The bras were displayed for everyone to admire and vote on with everyone making a donation to vote for their choice of best bra.
The contest concluded with the announcement of the prize winners. The first prize went to Glenn Butch MP for a beautifully decorated bra (courtesy of his office team) that featured intricate diamante work. Glenn is a committed supporter of Breast Screen and the lives it can save. The second prize was awarded to General Manager Jo Paringatai for an inspiring and highly decorated entry. The third prize modelled by Centre Manager Kerry Myers recognized a bra that cheekily encouraged you to ‘nip’ into headspace Gladstone for their Halloween themed headspace day Haunted Hangout event at the end of the month.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event. We raised over $500 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Your support and generosity are invaluable in the fight against breast cancer. Together, we are making a difference, one cup of pink lemonade at a time.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a crucial time for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) to highlight the importance of research. Breast cancer is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia, with 58 people diagnosed every day and over 21,000 new cases each year, including around 200 men. Tragically, over 3,300 Australians, including 33 men, lose their lives to breast cancer annually—that’s nine people every day.
The only way to stop deaths from breast cancer is by funding research to improve our understanding of how breast cancer originates, grows, and spreads. Thanks to research, the five-year survival rate has increased from 76% to 92% since 1994, but there is still progress to be made. NBCF’s goal is to reach Zero Deaths from breast cancer by targeting the remaining 8% who do not survive past five years.
NBCF rely entirely on generous donations from the Australian community to fund leading breast cancer researchers. Through these funds, they invest in world-class research in prevention, detection, new and improved treatments, and quality of life to ultimately stop deaths from breast cancer.

Let’s continue to promote awareness, support each other, and work towards a future free from breast cancer. Together we can build a strong, vibrant, compassionate community.
